Fun with Numbers, Mix Edition

numbers.pngStill feeling gravity’s pull lately, and Rich and Anthony gave me access to the Mix database this week. So, rather than review some new service (like Orgoo, for which I just got my beta invite) or wax philosophically about a New Web topic, I figured I’d dust off the SQL and crunch some numbers.

Side note: I’m wondering if anyone else has the following problem. You read about some new beta service that sounds pretty sweet. You sign up and wait. Then, months later, you get an invite, but can’t for the life of you remember what that service does or why you thought it was sweet.

I have that problem. It happened this week with Orgoo, previously with Spock, Scrybe, Bungee Labs and others. Note to startups: if you seek or get coverage from TechCrunch or ReadWriteWeb or Mashable or any other New Web outlet, open your beta round to everyone asking for an invite. Nothing kills the buzz like getting on the waiting list for some app and waiting.

Anyway, I’ve been working with several internal teams that are using Mix for groups. You’ll be seeing a lot more teams at Oracle using Mix in the coming months. Inevitably, questions about the Mix demographic arise like how many users are there, what percentage customers, etc. So, rather than continue to nag Rich and Anthony with these queries, I decided to do some actual work myself.

After getting the connection information and updating my old friend tnsnames.ora, I upgraded SQL Developer and got started. FYI, SQL Developer is an awesome tool, and I endorse it. Yes, my SQL skills are rusty, so what follows represents the low-hanging fruit.

Users

  • 6,963 total
  • 2,529 Oracle employees (36%)
  • 4,434 customers (64%)
  • Only 13% of profiles are public

Since I ran these numbers this morning, we’ve had 27 new people join Mix. Not bad.

Groups

  • 286 total
  • 230 public (80%)
  • 56 private (20%)
  • Average membership is 14
  • 58% of groups were created by Oracle employees

Miscellaneous

  • 2,631 tags exist in Mix
  • 607 ideas
  • 168 questions
  • 1,354 comments on ideas, questions and profiles

I would provide traffic numbers too, but we just switched over to new web analytics package. As of last week, we had more than 144,000 visits, averaging between 8,000-10,000 visits each week.

Want to see any other metrics? Let me know in comments, keeping in mind that I may give up if it’s too hard to write the SQL. And no, we’re not playing stump Jake with SQL queries.

In other Mix news, Rich and Anthony are deploying a bunch of changes soon, so stay tuned.
