Imitation as Flattery

Steve Chan sent me a note today asking me if I’d seen this blog, called Oracle Applications DBA APPSLab.

Apparently, the blog’s owner, Famy Rasheed, was asking Steve to list his new blog on Steve’s blogroll. Steve is a very conscientious (and popular) blogger, who has been plagiarized in the past, so he was doing the right thing by checking with me.

Let me say it now. I love Famy and his APPSLab blog. No flames here.

Here’s why. If Famy is copying our name, and I have to say “if” because it could be unknowingly, then someone out there thinks we’re cool, and that’s gravy. This is a happy-gram from the imitation-as-the-sincerest-form-of-flattery department for me.

Check out Famy’s content, and it’s wildly different than ours, so he’s definitely not plagiarizing. If Famy’s doesn’t know we exist, then he should now, and that’s one more reader for good old AppsLab. I can say old because we got started first.

Again, this isn’t a cease-and-desist. Frankly, I don’t care, and I doubt that Paul, Rich or Anthony does.

So, again, no need to flame. This is really a nice, albeit weird, compliment, in my mind. Check out Famy’s blog and see for yourself. And Steve, if you decide to add him to your blogroll, can you make sure we come out on top?

Other than the 'think tank' (duh!) stuff which he seems to have copy pasted and which does not fit his blog, I think he is cool.

I agree. Leave him alone. We want more pple writing searchable material on this stuff.

Hi,

This is Famy myself..

When i used to think of starting a blog on Oracle Applications, I had no idea in the beginning..and still I am very new into this. I hope I am keeping my blog and updating it well. So in the beginning when i was searching for a tag line, I just got that from here itself. I was not having any intention to copy paste the whole site.

Now when i saw this report I am very much surprised. I have updated with a new tag on my blog so that there is no issue on this regard from now onwards.

And hope you already know that my stuffs are completely different and unique from what you are carrying here..

@Famy: No worries, we did not have any issue with your blog. I just found it flattering that someone out there cared about what we're doing.

You should join Oracle Mix (mix.oracle.com) to stay in touch with the Oracle community.

@Anonymous: I don't read Famy's blog, but it pops up in my Google Alert for 'appslab'. Even if the content is copied from MetaLink, some would argue that's a plus, since MetaLink isn't indexed by search engines, leaving that content locking away behind a login wall.

Meh.
